Tires are the only contact with the trail. Wider casings and knobbier tread usually add grip and comfort; narrower or faster-rolling tread can feel quicker on hardpack but less planted in loose corners. Pressure is a dial — too high chatters and slides; too low risks rim strikes and burping.
