Race formats

These are how events are scored, not bike marketing categories. The same rider might race XC on a light hardtail one weekend and enduro on a longer-travel bike another season. For frame styles (trail, all-mountain, and so on), seebike categories.

Cross-country (XC) — NICA / league racing

The Cedar Valley Mountain Bike Team races cross-country through the Utah High School Cycling League (NICA). Riders earn time for the full race loop — climbs and descents both count. Fitness, pacing, and bike handling all matter.

Enduro

Enduro stages are timed on the downs (and sometimes technical sections). Riders usually still climb or transfer between stages under their own power, but those transfers are not part of the race clock the same way XC is. Youth programs such as Flyers Enduro follow this style on a different calendar than NICA XC.

Downhill (DH)

True downhill racing times the descent only. Riders often take a lift, shuttle, or separate climb to the start — the race effort is the downhill run, not the ride up.
